Craps Table Layout
Become familiar with the craps table layout. Craps looks immeasurably more complicated than it actually is. The game is simple, in itself, and the rules are as clear as can be. What becomes confusing for new players, though, are the seemingly infinite number of bets one can place. This is why it’s very important to know the game’s rules, but to also know how to play the game correctly.
Look at the picture. Frightened, yet? Don’t be. This is what I was talking about. This is what makes the game look more intricate than it is in actuality. Your garden variety table looks two tables have been united in the middle – each side is a mirror version of the other one. On the table, you will see different markings, numbers, lines and circles that divide the table into segments and at the first glance it looks that you will never be able to figure out which marking serves what function. However, only after a few games, you will know everything there is to know about the table and you will understand it as if you’ve played for years.
Aside from the Shooter and the bettors, the casino staff controlling the table are center figures in the game. There is the Boxman, who is in charge of the table and has many responsibilities. He guards the chips the house plays with and that are needed to play the game and pay the bettors their winnings; he is keeping a watchful eye on the casino staff and making sure they are not making any shenanigans.
If a problem should arise between players or some claims of unfairness are made, he would be the one to resolve the issues; and last but definitely not least, he would make sure that nobody can tamper with the dice, even if they are thrown out of the table. You will be surprised at how many people are trying to game the system. The Boxman is there to make sure that doesn’t happen.
The Stickman is another important part of the game. He is the one who would deliver the dice to the Shooter for another throw (initially, they are delivered by the Boxman for the first throw). The Stickman never touches the dice. He delivers them using his loyal stick (hence the name). Delivering the dice back to the Shooter is not his only function, though. The Stickman also announces the results of each throw, reminds bettors of the Point number and is in charge of the Proposition Bets (more about those later).
The other (usually) two people are the Dealers. They stand on the two sides of the table and are in charge of handling the players’ bets, exchanging money for chips and pay the winnings. It’s not unheard of for the Stickman and Dealers to take turns in performing various tasks and changing places, so it’s not a bad idea to get to know them. This is an unofficial rule – it’s always good to know the personnel (not only in casinos, but everywhere). This way you can easily ask for advice and they are usually helpful and wouldn’t mind guiding you through the process, which is something you might need if you’re new. Another point I have to make is that tipping is well appreciated. The proper etiquette for tipping is to place a small bet for the staff.
